More sales …sort of

I got an email recently from Smashwords, one of the popular ebook providers in the world alongside the much bigger, better resourced and – let’s face it – more polished Amazon store and Apple bookstore.

They were having a big sale and wanted authors to offer discounts on their books. Having nothing to lose I duly did so, opting (I thought) for discounts of 50 or 75 percent.

So imagine my surprise, delight and slight dismay (explained below) when I received not one, not two, but three emails from Smashword’s automated system during the few weeks of the sale period – which I’d completely forgotten about, informing me – ‘Per your request, we’re writing to notify you someone has purchased your book.’

That was delightful news as I said, but the dismay was because even though I don’t remember doing so, the list price was for some reason discounted from $2.99 down to $0.00.

So while I’m not going to retire this week, at least three more people in the world have decided to read it who have no interest or investment in me personally, which any artist will tell you if the ultimate arbiter of success.

…unless they made a mistake and thought they were buying one of the any number of other books with ‘Fall’ or ‘Falling’ in the title – see the August 15, 2022 blog.
